What is the PaintCare Program?

Each year about 800 million gallons of paint are sold in the United States. Over 10% of that paint goes unused and is available for recycling.

Recently, New York State stewardship law requires paint manufacturers to develop a financially sustainable and environmentally responsible program to manage post-consumer leftover paint. Paint manufacturers established PaintCare - a nonprofit organization - to run paint stewardship programs in states with applicable laws.

PaintCare now operates in 8 states with more signing on in the near future. The program includes education about buying the right amount of paint, tips for using up remaining paint - and most importantly - the setting up of convenient recycling locations throughout the state for consumers to drop off leftover paint.

How do I drop off Paint?

PaintCare sites like Roosters Home & Hardware accept all brands of leftover house paint, stain, and varnish whether recently used or many years old.

Please NOTE: At this time, Paint drop off is only accepted at our Stanfordville location.

Households may drops off up to 5 gallons of used leftover latex or oil-based paint during normal business hours and you must see a store associate about your drop-off materials so that it can be checked for proper disposal. No paint is allowed to be dropped off outside of normal business hours.

We accept up to 5 gallons of paint per resident. Please call us in advance to make sure we accept the type of paint you have. All paint containers must have lids with original labels.

What Paint is Accepted?

Acceptable Paint to Recycle:

Interior & Exterior latex, acrylic, water-based, alkyd, oil-based, and enamel based paint
Deck coatings, floor paint
Primers, Sealers, Undercoaters
Stains, Shellacs, lacquers, varnishes, urethanes (single component)
Waterproofing concrete sealers (non-tar)
Metal coatings, rust preventers
Field and lawn paints

What is NOT acceptable?

Paint thinners, mineral spirits, solvents
Aerosol paints / Spray Cans
Auto & Marine paint
Arts & Crafts paint
Caulk, epoxies, glues, adhesives
Wood preservatives
Roof patch / repair
Asphalt / Tar products
2-component coatings
Deck Cleaners
Traffic & Road Marking paint

Does it cost anything to drop off paint?

PaintCare is funded by small fee paid by paint manufacturers for each can of paint sold in NY. Manufacturers then pass this fee onto retailers who then apply it to the price of paint.
So there is no cost to this drop-off service to the consumer as the fee to fund this program has been charged upon purchase of paint.
